With an Unkey MCP server added, your assistant can create keys, check analytics, or roll back a deployment when you ask it to in chat. It calls the Unkey API for you, using a root key you provide.

Choose a server

Add the Unkey server if you’re not sure. If you only use Compute, the Compute server gives your assistant a shorter list of tools to choose from.

Create a root key

The server acts with the permissions of the root key you give it, so create a key just for your assistant.
  1. Under Settings > Root Keys, click New root key and name it after the assistant, for example “Claude Code”.
  2. Select only the permissions for what you want the assistant to do. See Root key permissions.
  3. Copy the key and store it as an environment variable, for example UNKEY_ROOT_KEY.
See Root keys for how to rotate or delete the key later.

Connect your client

Every client needs the server URL and one header with your root key:
Both servers use the same header. Most clients take a JSON entry like this one:
For steps in a specific client, see Claude Code, Cursor, or Other clients. The Unkey server’s install page and the Compute server’s install page also list every tool and have snippets for each client.

Try it

Ask in plain language. The assistant picks the tools and fills in the IDs.
Most clients ask you to approve each tool call. Read what the assistant is about to do before you approve a change like deleting a key or promoting a deployment.

Fix connection problems

  • The provided root key is invalid: the key in the header is wrong, deleted, or rotated. See key_not_found.
  • Missing permissions: the root key can’t do what the assistant tried. Add the permission to the key or ask for something else. See insufficient_permissions.
  • The server doesn’t connect: check that the URL matches the table exactly, with no trailing slash, and that the header is named Mcp-Unkey-V2-Bearer. Restart your client after you edit its config.
